As the 2026 MLB regular season enters its final month, the race for the postseason is beginning to take shape. Several teams have already put themselves in a strong position to reach October, while others remain in tight divisional and Wild Card battles.

According to ESPN’s latest playoff tracker, the Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs are among the National League teams with playoff spots looking increasingly secure. Current MLB Playoff Matchups

American League

The current Wild Card matchups listed by ESPN are:

  • Cleveland Guardians vs. Houston Astros
  • Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees

The projected AL Division Series matchups would then see the Guardians/Astros winner face the Chicago White Sox, while the Red Sox/Yankees winner would face the Tampa Bay Rays.

National League

In the National League, the current Wild Card matchups are:

  • San Diego Padres vs. Atlanta Braves
  • Chicago Cubs vs. Philadelphia Phillies

The projected NL Division Series would then feature the Padres/Braves winner against the Los Angeles Dodgers, while the Cubs/Phillies winner would face the Milwaukee Brewers.

Teams With Strong Playoff Chances

Entering the final month of the regular season, ESPN’s projections give the Brewers, Dodgers, Braves, Cubs, Rays and Yankees at least a 99% chance of making the playoffs.

That puts those six teams in a particularly strong position heading into the final stretch of the regular season.

American League Playoff Race

The AL East remains an important race, with the Rays, Yankees and Red Sox competing for the division title while all three teams are strongly positioned for postseason appearances.

Meanwhile, the White Sox and Guardians are battling in the AL Central. The Astros, Rangers and Mariners remain part of a more complicated AL West and Wild Card race.

ESPN’s playoff projections currently give the Yankees, Rays and Red Sox a 99% chance of making the playoffs, while the White Sox are at 91%, followed by the Astros at 65% and Guardians at 63%.

National League Playoff Race

The National League picture is also becoming clearer.

The Brewers, Dodgers and Braves have comfortable division leads, while the Wild Card race remains one of the major storylines. The Cubs and Phillies have begun to separate themselves, with the Padres and Diamondbacks among the teams still competing for postseason position.

ESPN currently projects a 99% chance of making the playoffs for the Dodgers, Brewers, Phillies, Braves and Cubs. The Padres have a 53% playoff probability, while the Diamondbacks are at 40%.

Game to Watch on September 2

One of the key games highlighted for September 2 is Cleveland Guardians vs. Toronto Blue Jays.

ESPN’s model gives the Guardians a 51% chance to win the game compared with 49% for the Blue Jays. The Guardians’ current playoff probability is listed at 63%, which could rise to 71% with a win and fall to 55% with a loss.

The 2026 postseason is scheduled to begin with the Wild Card Series on September 29.
